Competition Program
All dancers and acrobats must attend our Competition Team Auditions in July/August to be considered for placement on the team.
The 2024-2025 Auditions are July 22-25th, 2024. The audition workshops at MLSD are a mandatory part of the audition July 22-24th, and the final audition is at Five Points Thursday July 25th.
Those who make the competition team are placed on a "Company." Their main company is the group they will dance with for their jazz dance, lyrical/contemporary dance, and most of their technique classes. The company names vary from year to year, but the 2023-2024 companies were: Pee-Wee, Petite, Mini, Junior, Apprentice, Premiere, Protege, and, Elite.
We also have "Tap & Hip Hop Companies" The tap/hip hop companies are separate from jazz/lyrical companies, since ability is very different than jazz/lyrical. This ensures the dancers are being worked at their skill level, and not limited/too challenged based off their placement for jazz/contemporary. We have 4-5 company options: Select, A, B, C and D.
Solos and duets/trios are by invitation only (based off their audition). Those wanting a solo must audition for a solo during audition week. Dancers wanting a solo/duet/trio need to be prepared to put in extra time outside of class for private lessons and open studio time to learn and clean their routine.
New companies may be added from year-to-year, and some companies may be removed each year. The companies are formed based on average age of the performers, but first and foremost by attitude, ability and style of the dancers. We are dedicated to creating companies that will both benefit the dancers and best represent our studio.
All companies will attend 2 regional competitions in the spring. Some companies will attend an extra regional competition or 2, and 1 national competition.
Tuition prices are the same for competition dancers as recreational dancers, however they are required to take a certain number of classes each week. There are other fees throughout the year (boot camp, conventions, equipment, competition entry fees, competition jewelry, travel expenses, etc) and costumes are more expensive than recreational costumes.
*Note: All 2024-2025 competition team members are required to take 1 ballet class (1.5 hours long), 1 conditioning class, 1 turns and leaps class and 1 rehearsal class (some company rehearsals may be 1.5 hours long). Tappers take 1 tap class and some technique classes. The production class is by invite-only, and is optional.
